Printable gift card holder bookmark DIY template
Every graduate can use gift cards. I’m really into useful gifts with clever twists, and this graduation gift card idea is quick and easy to make using my free printable template. The top of the gift card is a paper mortarboard graduation cap complete with teeny DIY tassels using embroidery thread.
The bottom of the bookmark holds one gift card. Good gift card ideas for graduates include Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Apple, and of course, Starbucks for those late nights studying.
Personalize your handmade graduation cap gift card holder
You can personalize my graduation bookmarks with your graduate’s name, message, and graduation year. See below for personalization ideas and options, or just handwrite a message onto the free printable template.

Color-wise, you can personalize the bookmark to match the graduate’s school’s colors. Mary’s new college color is red, Hayden’s high school graduation colors are green and orange, and Noah’s new college is blue. I used my favorite colored card stock paper of course and chose vivid colors. The future is bright!
Supplies for making a 2024 Graduation Gift Card Holder Bookmark:
- Kathy’s free printable 2024 Graduation Gift Card Holder template (PDF) – allows you to type in an editable phrase, see instructions below
- Colored card stock paper – coordinate with the graduate’s school colors
- Good paper scissors or craft knife, metal ruler, and self-healing mat
- Glue stick
- Embroidery floss for tassel
- Paper cutting machine (optional but nice to have)
How to make a 2024 Graduation Gift Card Holder DIY Bookmark:
1. Print my free printable graduation gift card template
Download my free printable graduation gift card template for 2024. My free printable template allows you to type your own message in Adobe Reader. Print my free printable graduation gift card template onto colored card stock paper and cut. Pick your graduate’s school colors for their high school or college. This template doubles as a bookmark for textbooks.
2. Assemble the gift card holder
Fold the flap of the bookmark over evenly. The best way to do this is to score the paper using a craft knife and ruler. Flip your craft knife over so the dull end is touching the paper. Then run the dull side (not the sharp side!) against the ruler.
Fold the paper where you scored it and you’ll get a perfect paper fold.
Now glue the gift card holder flap onto the bookmark, flatten it with a heavy book, and let dry completely.
3. Add a graduation cap to the top of the bookmark / gift card holder
Cut out the graduation cap pieces. I am including ’24 in this printable template but you’ll see that ’19 is in these pictures. Please contact me if you’d like a different year or any special personalization – please purchase this Etsy listing and include your desired personalization in checkout.
Glue graduation cap pieces onto the top of the bookmark / gift card holder and let dry.
4. Make a DIY yarn graduation tassel (optional)
Add an optional tassel in your graduate’s school colors – thin yarn or embroidery floss works best. I followed this tutorial and modified the process a bit to make a tassel with a loop that will tie onto the top of the bookmark
First, wrap thin yarn or embroidery floss around a piece of cardboard 20 times. I used zipper instructions card that was about 1″ or so tall. Cut a 14″ piece of thin yarn or embroidery floss and tie into a loop.
Slip the loop under the tassel like so. Use a pencil or end of scissors to push it under.
Slip the left end of the loop into the other side of the loop and pull tight to secure.
Slip the tassel off of the cardboard. Then cut another 14″ piece of thin yarn or embroidery floss, make a loop in one end, and lay it on top of the tassel.
Wrap the loose end around the tassel tightly to secure. Then slip the loose end into the loop and pull tight to make a knot.
5. Attach yarn graduation tassel to the gift card holder
Slip the paper graduation year onto the tassel. Then loop the tassel through the hole in the graduation cap to secure. Be kind of gentle here – it is a paper gift card holder after all.
6. Slip the gift card into the gift card holder bookmark
Slip the gift card into the gift card holder bookmark and give to your graduate. Congratulations, you did it! ⭐⭐⭐
