Chalkboard gift tags

Merriment :: Chalkboard gift tags by Kathy Beymer

I came up with the idea of this chalkboard gift tag to add a wink to Chad and Shayda’s engagement party gift. But I think these tags would be great on children’s birthday gifts and teacher’s gifts too.

First cut a rectangle out of the colored thick paper using a paper trimmer. Mine was 3 inches by 4 inches. Using the paper, cut a rectangle of the same size from the chalkboard fabric.

A quick pause here. I am *totally* in love with chalk cloth. It’s soft and pliable, sort of the weight of oilcloth fabric. Oh my god, my head is spinning with all the things I can make out of this glorious stuff. You rub it with chalk to prime before using and then draw away! Wipe clean with a damp sponge.

Cut a piece of ribbon and fold in half. Make your loop big if tying on a gift bag. Tuck the ribbon raw ends between the chalk cloth and paper. Sew around the rectangle, backstitching a couple stitches or tying off ends. Use a box cutter to even up the sides if you’re anal like me. Then write your gift message on the paper side of the tag.

Here’s a trick: Use a piece of sandpaper to rough up all sides of your chalk. You’ll like the look better while avoid permanently scratching the fabric. Write and draw on your gift tag.

Tie a ribbon around the box. Slip the gift tag through the ribbon and tie a knot.

I have more chalkboard ideas up my sleeve coming soon. What are you making with chalkboard??

I just stumbled on your blog. I love it! You've (almost) inspired me to get crafty again...but it's summer and I'm lazy :) Please keep the great ideas coming, though, and who knows, maybe I can share with you some day.
