Washi Tape DIY Christmas Candles – Cozy Hygge DIY Gift Idea

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is decorating our house to feel super festive and cozy. Chicago gets dark at 4:30 PM in wintertime (sigh) so I like using scented candles to add a warm glow and create a happy mood …especially these modern DIY Christmas candles using washi tape and pom-poms. My DIY Christmas candles are cute and simple handmade craft.

Decorate scented candle jars with washi tape

This year, I’m using scented Christmas candles and scented wax melts from Air Wick’s Holiday Collection to really create the holiday atmosphere in our home. Turn glass jar candles into handmade candles using washi tape

I like decorating with whimsical, modern holiday decor. So I added colorful washi tape and super cute mini pom poms to decorate the glass candle jars, inspired by the recently ‘Washi Tape Crafts: 110 Ways to Decorate Just About Anything’ book that recently featured my cross-stitch washi tape artwork.

You can use whatever colors you like to incorporate the candles into your holiday decorating. I chose modern and neon washi tape colors for my holiday candles. These DIY Christmas candles also make easy DIY Christmas gifts. The kids and I are making a set of these DIY Christmas candles as DIY teacher appreciation gifts. They’re easy DIY gifts that look a lot more expensive than they cost to make.

The Air Wick Emerald Woodland candle is a multi-layered fragrance that says it smells like a combination of morning frost, evergreen and sugar cookie. It smells amazing. I wish you could scratch and sniff your screen right now.

Make DIY Hanukkah Candles using washi tape

My technique for making DIY holiday candles by adding washi tape is very versatile. Here’s a pretty version in blues and purple for Hanukkah…

The DIY Hanukkah candle uses the Spiced Apple Crumble scent which is a multi-layered scent of pastry crust, spiced apple, and vanilla notes. Mmm…it smells like I’ve been baking. Air Wick candles burn up to 30 hours, which is plenty of time to cheer up my home this December.

Supplies for making modern and whimsical DIY Christmas candles and DIY Hanukkah candles

• Air Wick Emerald Woodland scented candles and Apple Crumble scented candles
• Washi tape in holiday colors
• Wax paper
• Mini Pom-Poms
• Scissors and craft knife
• Star punch or other shape punches (optional)
• For tiles: 4″ x 4″ ceramic tiles (mine were left over from making DIY modern coasters), white felt, and craft glue

How to make modern DIY Christmas Candles and DIY Hanukkah candles

1. Peel off the label. Air Wick candles use easy peel-off labels — how thoughtful!
2. Tape washi tape onto wax paper, slightly overlapping separate pieces.
3. Cut out tree-shapes from the washi tape.
4. Peel the washi tape from the wax paper.
5. Tape onto the candle glass. Repeat steps 2-5 to add as many trees as you like.
6. To add stars: tape washi tape onto wax paper, punch out with a star-shaped punch.
7. Slip a craft knife between the wax paper and washi tape to help peel it from the wax paper.
8. Stick onto the trees, adding as many stars as you like.
9. For the striped version: choose three colors of washi tape.
10. Cut random heights and alternate onto the candle glass.
11. To make the tiles: Cut a piece of white felt and glue to the back of the ceramic tile. Let dry.
12. Add pom poms!

Washi Tape Tiles for Scented Wax Melts

I also made a washi tape candle plate for my Air Wick scented wax melts. This was my first time using wax melts so after reviewing the wax melts safety information, I added washi tape to ceramic tiles like so:

• Air Wick scented wax melts in Emerald Woodland and Apple Crumble
• Thin washi tape (awesome box of 20 colors)
• Scissors
• For tiles: 4″ x 4″ ceramic tiles (mine were left over from making DIY modern coasters), white felt, and craft glue

How to make DIY tiles for holiday wax melts:

1. Choose your colors of thin washi tape and overlap the ends of the ceramic tile.
2. Try it out, see if you want to add more.
3. Add more! I used four colors, two on one side, two on the other.
4. Glue a piece of white felt on the back.
5. Put four tiles together. Open your wax melts.
6. Add the wax melt in the top, plug in, enjoy the holiday scent.
