I was inspired by this photo showing the stairs to go into The Wooly Mammoth bar in Queensland, Australia. Because I went to graduate design school in Sydney, I think it’s was extra poetic that Aussies thought of this brilliant idea.
Elise is turning 6, so her party theme became “Episode IV: Return of the Birthday.” Here’s a video of the original opening crawl for Return of the Jedi.
Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi – Opening Crawl on Disney Video
When I started thinking about party decorations for Elise’s Star Wars birthday party, the Star Wars Crawl on our stairs was the first thing that I wanted to do but the last thing that I ended up doing. I thought it would be hard to print it and piece it together, so I put it off for other things: I made a Sarlacc Pit game from a cardboard box, froze a bunch of Star Wars LEGO Minifigures for a Han Solo Carbonite game, made a Star Wars happy birthday banner, made a Star Wars crawl poster front door decoration, and made a BB-8 cake. Finally, the day before the party, I decided to give this Star Wars Crawl on Stairs a try.
Then I called FedExOffice and found out that they print 36″ wide roll paper and charge by the square foot. What?!? That’s perfect! It cost me only about $9.00 to print these black and white pieces of paper for my stair risers at FedExOffice, and thy cut them to size too.
Now I want to paper every stairwell in Chicago with Star Wars opening crawls…
Look at my Padawan. What a ham.
People assume that Elise’s dad is the Star Wars fan but the truth is that it’s me. Star Wars Episodes IV, V and VI are magical and I love them so much, and I passed it onto my girl, and it’s fun to share it with her.

We wrote a parody of Return of the Jedi opening crawl because my daughter was turning IV.
3. PRINT just the pages that you need. You’ll ideally want to print this at your local professional printing shop – I printed mine at FedExOffice’s where they print 36″ wide roll paper and charge by the square foot, and it was roughly $10 to print and cut 9 pages for my stairs. Just call your local store first to confirm that it has 36″ wide paper roll printing, then email them your personalized file and ask them to print in black and white. They will cut the risers out for you too. Mine looked like this:
4. TAPE them to the front of your stair risers using painter’s tape.

Hi Shelby, I made the banner / bunting. It's a printable that I have yet to put onto the site, but I will be getting it up soon. I printed it onto colors the same as the lightsabers - it's my lightsaber theme for a Star Wars party and I think it's more festive than all black and space-y.
