Even though I swore long ago that I’d make my own kids’ birthday cakes, I still like to take the easy way out. Remember the easy Buzz Lightyear birthday cake that I made for Elise’s 3rd Toy Story birthday? Well, made it even easier on myself for Elise’s superhero birthday cake by making super hero cake toppers and putting them into the cake.
Elise wanted “all of the super heroes” on her birthday cake so I thought printable super hero cake toppers would be the way to go. I made a “city” (the Chicago skyline) with a personalized bat signal, plus a “4” signs and stars. Then I added free superhero illustrations, and I’d like to thank sleepycomics, stewartisme and OWC478 at deviant art for letting me to use their Wonder Woman, Superman, and Spider-Man graphics. I think they look really nice with my stars and number signs.
I dyed the cake layers like all the cool kids do these days which made slicing into it extra fun. And then I made one cake layer blue, one layer red, and one layer yellow.
It was an easy and fun DIY super hero birthday cake to make, and it tasted great. I feel heroic!
My super girl loved her superhero birthday cake. Happy 4th birthday, Super Elise!

How to make an easy super hero birthday cake for a superhero birthday party:
Step 1: Bake colorful cake layers (red, blue, yellow) and make the buttercream
Start by baking and decorating a simple cake. If you know me, then you know that I’m no blue-ribbon baker. Fortunately, I have a friend who is a professional baker and she shares her recipes and tips for free at her website, Cakegirls. I made my cakes in advance using the Cakegirls vanilla cake and buttercream recipes that I also used last year on Elise’s Buzz Lightyear birthday cake for her Toy Story birthday. You can bake cakes well in advance, even weeks ahead, and freeze until you’re ready to decorate.
Step 2: Stack colorful cake layers and cover with buttercream
Put a little buttercream icing onto the cake board. Stack the yellow cake layer, the add buttercream, the red cake layer, more buttercream, and the blue cake layer. Then to cover up my icing mistakes, I put red gumdrops around the bottom that I bought at Party City. Cute, yes?
Here’s a tip: Be sure to cover the cake with a box when you bring it out to room temperature to reduce condensation on the cake as it hits the warmer air.
Step 3: Add my free printable Superhero Cake Toppers
Print out my superhero cake toppers and glue them onto lollipop sticks (you will have fronts and backs with the lollipop stick sandwiched in the middle) — if you would like the cake toppers personalized with name and age, then please see my personalization listing at Etsy.
Stick the super hero cake toppers into the birthday cake. It’s that easy!
