Easy DIY classroom exchange valentines to make as a kids craft activity
My 6-year-old son, Liam, got a kids’ joke book in his Christmas stocking and he’s all into telling us silly jokes these days. Last year, we made our own DIY LEGO classroom Valentines so I thought it would be fun to make DIY valentines with Valentine’s Day jokes for him to pass out to his classroom friends at school. We gathered up a bunch of heart-themed jokes and even made up some of our own using punch lines from other jokes.
You only need a handful of supplies to make my DIY Jokes Valentines: ASTROBRIGHTS cardstock paper, paper glue, scissors, and a craft knife (or butter knife from your kitchen) and ruler. Color-wise, Liam and I chose Fireball Fuchsia™, Pulsar Pink™, Plasma Pink™, Celestial Blue® and Re-Entry Red™ from my Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies color palette inspiration.
Creative valentine classroom exchange cards with Valentine’s Day jokes
My DIY Valentine’s Day Jokes Cards are fun and friendly without being too romantic, so it’s a great valentines idea for boys and girls to make for their classroom valentines exchange cards. Kids can sign their names on the backs to practice their handwriting skills and can add a couple small hearts for extra love.
Now what do you call a very small Valentine? A valen-tiny!
Tuck a joke into your kid’s lunchbox on Valentine’s Day
And my printable Valentine’s Day Joke Valentines also make great lunchbox notes. Parents can make 14 jokes to count down to Valentine’s Day — just put one into your child’s lunchbox each day from February 1 – 14 — or make just one lunchbox note for February 14. I’d choose this joke for lunchbox notes on Valentine’s Day: “What did peanut butter say to the jelly on Valentine’s Day? You’re my jam!”
Supplies for making my free printable classroom valentines featuring Valentine’s Day jokes

- ASTROBRIGHTS® cardstock paper
- Good paper scissors
- Glue stick
- Craft knife (or butter knife from your kitchen), metal ruler and self-healing mat
- Optional heart-shaped paper punch
How to make my classroom exchange jokes valentines
Step 1: Print my Valentine’s Day jokes templates and cut out
I’ve created four jokes valentines templates for you to print and cut:
- Squares for the Valentine backs (with To and From)
- Answer hearts (2 sets)
- Question hearts (2 sets)
- Contrast color hearts – optional but looks cute
Step 2: Glue punchlines to the squares
Place squares with the To/From facing down on the table. Glue red contrast hearts onto the blank side of the rectangle using a glue stick. Again, contrast hearts are optional to add another color. Then glue an answer to the contrast heart. Let dry.
Step 3: Score the top of the joke question hearts
You’re going to fold the top of the joke question heart so that people can easily lift to see the punchline .Scoring is the best way to ensure a clean fold. Lay a metal ruler onto the heart-shaped question. Run the *back dull edge* of a craft knife (or non-serrated butter knife from your kitchen) along the ruler edge to make a slight dent into the paper. This will make it easy for kids to fold up to see the punchline.
Step 4: Glue the top part of the heart-shaped question onto the answer
Secure the top of the heart by gluing just the top scored portion of the question hearts to the answer heart. Gluing just the top above the score line allow kids to fold up the joke’s question to see its punchline.

- What did the ceiling say to the chandelier on Valentine’s Day? I like hanging around you.
- What did one octopus say to the other on Valentine’s Day? I want to hold your hand hand hand hand hand hand hand hand.
- What did the watermelon say to the cantaloupe on Valentine’s Day? You’re one in a melon!
- Why did the kid put chocolate candy hearts under his pillow? Because he wanted to have sweet dreams.
- What did the T-Rex say to the stegosaurus on Valentine’s Day? You’re dino-mite!
Step 6: Write names and add optional treats or candy
Writing names is good handwriting practice for kids. You can tape a piece of candy to the back of the Valentine using cute washi tape if you’d like to add a little extra treat.
